About Ernest
Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) was an American novelist famed for his spare prose and adventurous life, blending wartime trauma (as a WWI ambulance driver), bullfighting, and big-game hunting into seminal works like The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea. A pillar of the “Lost Generation” in 1920s Paris, his novels—A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls—explored stoicism and existential grit, earning him a Nobel Prize. A daring journalist in Spain’s Civil War and WWII, he survived near-fatal plane crashes in Africa but later succumbed to depression, dying by suicide. His mythic persona and terse style remain cornerstones of modernist literature.
About the Genres Ernest wrote in
Ernest Hemingway wrote primarily in literary/modernist fiction, crafting spare, direct prose that emphasized subtext (his “iceberg theory”). His war novels—like A Farewell to Arms (WWI) and For Whom the Bell Tolls (Spanish Civil War)—blended gritty realism with existential themes of courage and futility. Adventure fiction (The Old Man and the Sea, Green Hills of Africa) explored human endurance against nature, while his short stories (“Hills Like White Elephants,” “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”) distilled complex emotions into minimalist dialogue and imagery. Hemingway’s background in journalism influenced his factual tone, and his non-fiction (Death in the Afternoon, A Moveable Feast) blended memoir with cultural commentary. Across genres, his work centered on stoicism, loss, and the search for meaning in a fractured world.
